A Statement from Hickory Chair and Thomasville (U.S.A)

Hickory Chair and Thomasville has enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Da Vinci in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and China since 1996. But in this new agreement signed in January 2011, the company will become strategic partners with Da Vinci in a joint venture that will see growth like we have never seen before. Hickory Chair and Thomasville has been the leading brand of American furniture for more than 100 years. This furniture is sourced from our factories all over the world. In the past, their furniture was sold on Da Vinci retail floors was first shipped from the factory of origin to their warehouses in the eastern United States, consolidated, and shipped half way around the world to Da Vinci. This involved extra handling and all the expenses associated with that handling, extra freight costs, tariffs, taxes, and overhead. By the time the furniture reached the Da Vinci retail floor, it was too expensive for many consumers and it was not cost competitive with locally manufactured American-style products in the Asian market.

For the first time ever, Da Vinci will be receiving all Hickory Chair and Thomasville Furniture directly from their factories at their actual cost; no extra freight, taxes, tariffs, or overhead. This means much lower prices for the Da Vinci customer shopping for fine American furniture. It also means that Da Vinci will be able to offer America’s favorite furniture brand to its consumers at a price that is competitive with locally made products, although Hickory Chair and Thomasville by Da Vinci will be of finer quality and will be backed by their guarantee of fine craftsmanship.

With this competitive advantage, plans are in place now for Da Vinci to open a total of 20 new Hickory Chair and Thomasville boutique throughout China, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia in 2011 while a further 30 stores are scheduled to be operational within the following year, bringing the total to 50 Da Vinci - Hickory Chair and Thomasville boutiques by 2012.

Why Did Hickory Chair and Thomasville choose Da Vinci as Their Partner

For years Hickory Chair and Thomasville’s have searched for ideas to bring their product to retail stores in Asia at more competitive prices. It took a while to figure out how they would do it, but in their minds, there was only one partner in Asia they wanted to do it with; Da Vinci. They have been in the Asian market for over twenty years and they have never seen another retailer with the vision, the resources, and the expertise that Da Vinci brings to the consumer. America’s favorite furniture brand teaming up with Asia’s best furniture retailer always seemed like the only desirable path for them.

Philip Nifong (President of Hickory Chair and Thomasville – Asia-Pacific) and the Equation he brought into this partnership

Philip Nifong has been a part of the Hickory Chair and Thomasville organization for 25 years but his history with Hickory Chair, Thomasville and the furniture industry is much longer and deeper. His ancestors settled 8 miles from Hickory Chair and Thomasville in the mid 1700’s when North Carolina was still a British colony. He still owns part of that original family farm where his ancestors settled when they emigrated from Europe 260 years ago. Many of his ancestors were among the most highly skilled craftsmen of solid walnut early American furniture in North Carolina. Some of his relatives later became artisans in our own factories when our company started over 100 years ago. He spent his childhood years helping his grandfather handcraft 18th century reproductions in his grandfather’s workshop.

Philip Nifong is the most authentic furniture person in our company, it’s in his blood, and he adds greatly to our credibility in the industry. As the new President of Hickory Chair and Thomasville – Asia-Pacific, Phil Nifong has made it clear that he believes that our company’s future success is tied to our relationship with Da Vinci in Asia. He has been telling us that for a long time and is now demonstrating his belief with his presence. He will be living in Asia for the next several years working exclusively on Hickory Chair and Thomasville by Da Vinci and insuring that America’s favorite furniture brand becomes Asia’s favorite American furniture brand.
